Active Navigation
Active Navigation provides a rapidly deployable technology that automatically extracts themes from unstructured data and enables rapid categorisation, without the need for a dictionary or training sets. The product is made up of a number of modules which when combined together provide a complete solution to the review of large quantities of electronic content for the purposes of discovery, general housekeeping or migration into a content management system.
- Content Audit – Active Navigation helps you gain an overview of what information assets you hold. This can include highlighting potentially redundant content based on age and format, as well as identifying exact and near duplicates; drawing attention to content held which infringes company policy; reporting on the validity of hyperlinks; identifying common concepts / themes amongst the documents; and suggesting categorisation strategies.
- Content Tagging – Active Navigation can automate the extraction and creation of meaningful, rich metadata for your legacy electronic content, including: keywords and phrases that describe the actual content; intelligent summaries of content; author and date document created / modified (where this exists); positioning within a corporate taxonomy; related document suggestions.
- Content Migration – Active Navigation significantly reduces the amount of time taken to prepare content for upload into content and document management systems. Using a sophisticated linguistic analysis Active Navigation can rapidly analyze the content with minimal set-up costs. There is no need for training sets, dictionaries, predefined vocabularies or prior knowledge of the content required. Information residing in multiple locations, and in many data formats, can be prepared for upload in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional or manual approaches.
- Taxonomy Management – Active Navigation can build taxonomies within a fraction of the time taken using traditional approaches, without the need for training sets. Your information owners are able to review the results of the theme extraction process and then build a hierarchical structure, using tools built into Active Navigation, which enables information users to find relevant information quickly and efficiently. The process is not manually intensive; as new nodes need to be added a label can be created and that node will automatically be populated not just with new content but also with historical content that has been themed. No retraining / re-theming of the system is required in order to recognise these new nodes. If you already have a taxonomy in place this information can be used by Active Navigation to build and maintain indexes and navigation structures that reflect this taxonomy.
- Guided Information Discovery – Active Navigation aggregates information contained in disparate corporate repositories, in many different formats. The system is easily integrated into existing infrastructure, including security mechanisms, and leverages existing investments made in, for example, document and content management systems. By contextually analyzing and organising your content, Active Navigation helps your end-users find exactly what they're looking for. It provides a guided information discovery solution that guides them to the answers/information they are seeking, even when they find it hard to describe their needs and in a much reduced timeframe.
Industry analysts, the Butler Group, have described Active Navigation as “...a well-designed and focused product that meets the genuine business need to manage information overload”. The product has also been awarded both the prestigious Information Technology Award and the British Computer Society Award.
